Black Limestone

What was done

For this project we laid a black limestone patio that wraps along the rear and side of the house, surrounded by oak sleepers that were painted for a darker, more dramatic finish. The slabs were jointed with black easy joint to keep the dark theme consistent, and a contrasting band of porcelain paving was set in near the back door to separate that threshold from the main patio. A linear drainage channel runs along the base of the brickwork, and the photos show the patio left half-wet on purpose so the owners could see how the stone looks in both dry and rainy weather.

The finished look

Black limestone has real character: dry it reads as a soft charcoal, but as soon as it is wet it deepens to a glossy near-black with subtle veining, so the patio effectively offers two looks in one. The painted sleeper edge frames the paving crisply and ties in with the dark joints, while the lighter porcelain doorway band gives a neat point of contrast. The result is a smart, low-key entertaining and access space that sits comfortably against the red-brick house.
