Gravel & Shingle Driveways In Norwich, Norfolk

Cost-Effective, Secure, and Stylish Driveway Surfacing

A gravel or shingle driveway is one of the most versatile and budget-friendly options for homeowners in Norfolk. Offering a satisfying “crunch” underfoot and a rustic, natural aesthetic, it is a popular choice for both country cottages and modern properties. At Breckland Paving, we install high-quality gravel driveways that are designed to stay flat, weed-free, and low maintenance.

Unlike the “loose stone” driveways of the past that scattered everywhere, our modern installations use advanced stabilisation technology. We combine proper ground preparation with cellular retention grids to create a firm, stable surface that can handle heavy vehicle traffic without sinking or rutting.

Why Choose Gravel & Shingle?

Beyond its classic look, gravel offers several practical benefits that make it a smart investment for your property.

    • Enhanced Security: The noise created by walking or driving on gravel acts as an excellent natural burglar alarm, alerting you to visitors immediately.
    • Cost-Effective: Gravel is generally more affordable per square metre than block paving or resin, allowing you to cover large driveways or long access roads without breaking the budget.
    • Excellent Drainage: As a naturally permeable surface, gravel allows rainwater to soak directly into the ground. This makes it fully SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) compliant, often removing the need for planning permission or expensive soakaways.

Our Gravel & Shingle Options

We source a wide range of decorative aggregates to match your home’s style. During your consultation, we can provide samples of various sizes, textures, and colours.

Golden Pea Shingle

A local favourite in Norfolk and Suffolk. This mix of chestnut, gold, and brown stones offers a warm, traditional look that blends perfectly with red brick and timber-framed houses.

Cotswold Buff

An angular, cream-coloured stone that provides a brighter, more contemporary finish. The angular shape locks together better than rounded stones, providing a slightly firmer surface.

Granite Chippings

For a modern, high-contrast look, we offer silver or dark grey granite chippings. These are extremely durable and perfect for monochrome property designs.

Our Gravel & Shingle Driveway Installation Process

Years Of Experience in Norfolk
0 +

We apply the same rigorous standards to our gravel driveways as we do to our block paving. We never just “top up” existing dirt; we build a new road.

    1. Excavation & Clearance: We dig out the area to the required depth, removing organic matter and soil.
    2. Geotextile Membrane: We install a heavy-duty weed suppression membrane to prevent growth from coming up through the driveway while allowing water to drain away.
    3. Sub-Base Construction: We lay and compact a Type 1 Granite or MOT sub-base. This provides the structural strength to support cars and delivery vans.
    4. Grid Installation: We lay the cellular retention grids, securing them firmly to the sub-base.
    5. Spreading: We fill the grids with your chosen decorative aggregate, creating a smooth, level finish that is ready for immediate use.

The Importance of Cellular Grids

The biggest complaint about cheap gravel driveways is “migration”—where the stones move, pile up in ridges, or spill onto the road. We solve this by installing Cellular Retention Grids.

These interlocking plastic honeycombs are laid on top of the sub-base and filled with gravel. They hold the stones in place, ensuring the gravel stays evenly spread. This allows you to walk across the driveway in high heels, push a pram, or ride a bike easily, as the surface remains firm rather than deep and loose.

Will weeds grow through the gravel?

We install a high-grade geotextile membrane underneath the stone to stop weeds growing up from the soil below. However, surface weeds can occasionally settle in the dust between stones over time (blown in by the wind). These are shallow-rooted and easily treated with a standard weed killer.

Yes. To stop the gravel from spreading into your lawn or flower beds, we recommend installing a solid edge. This can be a timber sleeper, a row of granite setts, or a block paving border, which adds a neat, professional finish.

Loose gravel will migrate to the bottom of a slope. However, by using our cellular grid system, we can successfully retain gravel on moderate slopes, as the grids lock the stone in place. For very steep inclines, we might recommend Resin Bound surfacing instead.

We have completed the Northwold project for our lovely customers. Despite facing delays due to frequent bad weather, we were able to finish it successfully. As part of the project, we carried out the following works: - Installed two new soakaways - Removed the old boundary wall - Raised the lawn and cesspit chamber to a new level - Laid around 120m² of beautiful ivory cream porcelain - Installed raised sleeper planters and retaining walls - Extended the driveway and installed gravel grids at the entrance to prevent stone migration - Waiting for the sail to be installed over the raised patio. This was a complete front and back garden and wow what a difference.
Another project completed front and back in Banningham. We completely stripped both front and back then removed excess soil around 110 tons. We then installed to outbuilding bases with both having electric running to them. We also replaced a few sections of fencing send removed 4 large trees. We then installed fossil mint Sandstone patio going around the house linking to the driveway which consists of Tobermore duo blocks in graphite, silver and Sandstone colours. Then the remaining areas had planter beds created and then surrounded with 20mm gravel.
Another happy customer in attleborough extended gravel driveway, new Indian sandstone step and new Indian sandstone path also new gate and fence panels replaced with a large laurel hedging ripped out at the front and cross top fencing installed at the front with block paved entrance to stop the transition of stone.
