Professional Patio Paving & Hard Landscaping in Norfolk

The Art and Science of Premium Paving
A patio is more than just an outdoor seating area; it is an extension of your home’s living space and a significant investment in your property’s value. At Breckland Paving & Landscaping, we combine aesthetic design with rigorous engineering. Whether you desire the timeless appeal of Indian Sandstone in Attleborough or a contemporary porcelain finish in Norwich, our team ensures your patio is built to last a lifetime.

Many paving projects in Norfolk fail prematurely due to “spot bedding” or inadequate sub-bases. We differentiate ourselves by adhering to BS 7533, the British Standard for the installation of pavements. By choosing Breckland, you are guaranteed a patio that remains level, weed-free, and structurally sound through every British winter.

1. Natural Stone Paving (Sandstone, Slate & Limestone)

Natural stone remains a favourite across Norfolk for its unique textures and durability.

  • Ethically Sourced Indian Sandstone: We provide a variety of finishes, from riven textures to sawn and honed edges for a more modern aesthetic.
  • Full Mortar Bedding: Unlike budget installers, we lay every stone on a continuous wet mortar bed (never spots or “dots”), ensuring 100% coverage to prevent rocking and moisture-related damage.
  • SBR & Primming Slurry: We apply an SBR priming slurry to the underside of every slab to ensure a permanent chemical bond between the stone and the mortar bed.

2. Contemporary Porcelain Paving

Porcelain has revolutionised Norfolk garden design due to its incredibly low maintenance and non-porous nature.

  • Anti-Slip Ratings: We only install porcelain with a minimum R11 slip rating, ensuring your patio is safe for family use even when wet.
  • Precision Cutting: Our team uses water-cooled diamond blade saws to achieve millimetre-perfect cuts, essential for the clean lines required in modern landscaping.
  • Frost Resistance: Because porcelain absorbs almost no water, it is immune to the “freeze-thaw” cycle that often cracks inferior concrete products.

3. Block Paving & Driveway Groundworks

For high-traffic areas and driveways throughout Norfolk, block paving offers versatility and strength.

  • Interlocking Strength: We utilise high-quality blocks that distribute weight effectively, preventing ruts and “sinking” over time.
  • Concrete Edging kerbs: Every paving project is secured with a concrete edgeing kerb to prevent lateral movement and “spreading” of the blocks.

Technical Engineering: What Lies Beneath

The Multi-Layered Sub-Base
The longevity of your patio is determined before the first slab is laid. We treat every paving project like a civil engineering task:

  • Excavation: We excavate to a minimum depth of 200mm–250mm depending on the soil conditions in your part of Norfolk.
  • Geotextile Membrane: We install a heavy-duty fabric layer to separate the soil from the aggregate, preventing the sub-base from sinking into the ground.
  • MOT Type 1 Compaction: We install a minimum of 100mm–150mm of certified Type 1 aggregate, compacted in layers.

SuDS Compliance & Surface Water Management
UK law requires that new hardstanding areas manage water runoff responsibly.

  • Permeable Solutions: We offer permeable paving options that allow water to filter back into the water table.
  • Integrated Drainage: For non-permeable surfaces, we install Aco drains and linear channels that direct water into soakaways, protecting your home’s Damp Proof Course (DPC) and adhering to UK Building Regulations.

Specialist Paving Features

Sunken seati ng areas & Tiered Terraces
For gardens with varying elevations throughout the Norwich area & Norfolk, we specialise in tiered paving solutions.

  • Retaining Masonry: We build structural brick or block walls to support tiered sections, finished with matching stone copings.
  • Hidden Drainage: Tiered patios require complex internal drainage systems to prevent water from collecting on lower levels—a task we manage with our Groundworks expertise.

Bespoke Curves & Circular Paving

"Did someone say curves?" Our portfolio features intricate circular designs and winding paths. These require expert "hand-tooling" and custom cuts to ensure the joints remain consistent and aesthetically pleasing.

Local Knowledge & Reliable Suppliers

We understand the specific challenges of the Norfolk landscape. From the sandy soils of the Brecks to the moisture-heavy areas near the coast, we adapt our mortar mixes and sub-base depths to suit the local geology. We work with leading UK suppliers to ensure every slab, bag of cement, and ton of aggregate is of the highest professional grade.

CSCS Qualified Professionals

Our team is CSCS certified, meaning we operate with the technical skill and health and safety awareness required for professional site work. We don't just "lay a patio"—we manage a construction project with precision.

How long does a natural stone patio last?

When installed on a full mortar bed with a proper sub-base, a Sandstone or Porcelain patio can easily last 25–30 years. Regular cleaning and occasional re-pointing are all that’s required.

We generally advise against it. To guarantee our work, we prefer to excavate the old concrete to ensure the ground conditions haven’t shifted. This allows us to install a fresh, SuDS-compliant sub-base.

Most residential patios fall under “permitted development,” but if you are paving a front garden over five square metres, you must use permeable materials or direct the water to a lawn or border to comply with UK law.
